Moving Day! Why Your Plants Are Ready for an Upgrade

We’ve all been there—outgrowing our favorite pair of shoes or realizing we desperately need an extra bedroom. Your plants feel the same way! When your green friends start looking a bit top-heavy or seem "grumpy" despite your best care, it’s time for a Moving Day celebration.

Is it time for a bigger home?

Your plant can’t pack a suitcase, but it will send you these "SOS" signals:

  • The Peek-a-Boo: Roots are poking out of the drainage holes or swirling around the surface.

  • The Quick Sip: You water them, and it seems to run straight through the bottom immediately (a sign there is more root than soil!).

  • The Plateau: They’ve simply stopped growing, even though it's peak season.

The House of Roots "Moving Day" Guide

1. The "Goldilocks" Pot

It’s tempting to give your plant a mansion, but too much space is actually dangerous! Always follow the 1–2 Inch Rule: only move up to a pot slightly larger than the current one. If the pot is too big, the extra soil holds onto a "reservoir" of water that the roots can't reach, which often leads to the dreaded root rot.

2. The Gentle Squeeze

Don't just yank! Give the sides of the old pot a gentle squeeze to loosen the soil. Turn the plant sideways, support the main stem with your fingers, and let it slide out.

3. Tickle the Roots

If your plant is "root-bound" (roots growing in tight circles), they need a little help. Lightly tease or "tickle" the bottom roots to encourage them to grow outward into their new neighborhood instead of continuing in a circle.

4. The Settling Soak

Once they are tucked into their new pot with fresh soil, give them a deep, celebratory drink! This isn't just for thirst—it helps the soil settle and removes hidden air pockets that could otherwise dry out and damage those tender roots.

Pro-Tip: The best time for Moving Day is usually early Spring. This gives your plant the entire growing season to enjoy their new "renovated" space while they are at their highest energy!
